Preliminary #1H2023 #TAVR procedural highlights in #Greece include : around 806 procedures directly aligned with our estimation one year ago for 1600+ implants by the end of 2023 translated to a growth of around 28% vs PY.
Around 56% of the procedures are performed in public and hybrid hospitals (Onassis, Papageorgiou) and 44% in private. In public, 85% of the procedures are performed with Self Expandable valves (SE) and just 15% with Balloon Expandable valves (BE).In private,70% of the procedures are performed with SE valves and 30% with BE valves.
On the other side of the coin, global statistics indicate that BE valves are used in around 50%-52% of the TAVR procedures with another 48%-50% performed with SE valves.
Robust clinical evidence for both types exist for most of the suppliers and especially the market leaders, and this is more than enough and almost balanced between the two types.
Finally, is worth to mention the fact that the central procurement committee #EKAPY in Greece has announced an MOH tender for 36 million Euro for 2 years (1000 units annually) for all public and hybrid hospitals including 90% of the requested quantity to be SE valves and 10% only, BE valves.
Local #Strategy implementation #Clinicalsupportteams and organization, #Salesexecution from different suppliers between the 2 major types of TAVR valves have shaped a picture in our country that differs significantly from what is happening worldwide.
At the same time, perhaps MOH should have included global trends and therapy evolution and more updated local implant datasets before setting up requested tender quantities in order to make sure that the patients in Greece will receive optimal therapy in a fully personalized environment based on their anatomic particularities .
Food for thought….
